Goal 2: Develop and implement a formal plan to improve the appearance of Main Street and major gateways
Goal 2: Objectives
Key objectives related to potential City projects:
- Develop minimum landscaping requirements for businesses along Main Street.
- Research and form committee to apply for grants for trees. Identify a “core area” for South Hutchinson.
- Utilize City resources to purchase Main Street properties when they become available.
- Increase number of crosswalks along Main Street.
- Study existing bike path and analyze danger of location adjacent to major thoroughfare with heavy truck traffic.
- Seek financial incentives to promote beautification (curb appeal) of existing businesses.
- Develop a plan to smooth the transition between residential neighborhoods, industrial areas and Main Street on the West Blanchard and West 6th Avenue corridors.
- Develop zoning modifications to promote redevelopment of commercial corridors and control the type of structures consistent with a vibrant community.
Key objectives related to community wide beautification:
- Recruit a group of volunteers to beautify specific areas.
- Host annual community Clean Up Day.
- Create a program to increase planting of vegetation—utilize children and schools.
- Involve upper elementary students (5th or 6th graders) in community beautification projects.
Progress Report
Progress reports for each goal are provided on a quarterly basis to the City Council. The updated provided only notes the changes from the previous update. A full update is available in the document library. Update was provided to the City Council on July 17, 2017.The City’s
- Comprehensive Plan was adopted on March 2016. The code makes limited provisions for zoning changes. Further work will need to be completed to established mixed use zoning classifications.
- City Council approved Ordinance 17-882 which adds R-2 residential uses in C-2 property through the conditional use permit process. The suggestion for the change was brought by specific businesses.
